Recent literature supports prolonged/extended infusion times of beta-lactam antibiotics. This maximizes their time dependent bactericidal activity. For beta-lactams, in vitro an danimal studies have demonstrated that the best predictor of bacterial killing is the duration in which the free drug concentration exceeds the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the organism (T>MIC). This is particularly important in the treatment of infections caused by pathogens with high antimicrobial MICs.
